Before and After

Back in college, I hated ironing so much, I would type my roomate’s papers in exchange for her ironing my clothes. Flash forward a decade plus and I still hate ironing just as much. I love the idea of a Downy Wrinkle Releaser, a spray that removes wrinkles from clothing without the hassle of ironing, but does it really work?

How the Downy Wrinkle Releaser work?

According to the package directions, you spray the product directly on the wrinkled clothing. You then firmly tug the item of clothing horizontally or vertically, then smooth with your hands. The product website recommends spraying stretchy fabrics, including sweaters; small items, including shorts or short skirts; and long pants on a flat surface.

It says it is safe to use it on all fabrics, but to do a test patch on fabrics that may stain, including silk and rayon.

It has what is called “a light fresh scent”. I agree and would say it smells like fresh laundry.

Does the Downy Wrinkle Releaser have other benefits?

The other benefits of using the Downy Wrinkle Releaser according to the website include: A spritz of the wrinkle releaser helps prevent static cling, freshens musty clothes with its light scent and can be used as a starch when you iron clothes the old-fashioned way.

It will also work well on clothes that you left sitting in the dryer for too long. A quick spritz and a stretch will make your clothing wrinkle-free.

In the same vein, you could spray your clothes when you’re done wearing them and are hanging them up at the end of the day. That way they’ll be wrinkle-free and fresh-smelling when you go to wear them again.

How does the Downy Wrinkle Releaser perform?

When I tried it on the very mushed T-shirt that was sent along as a promotion (see photo), it worked OK. I think their PR efforts may have been done in by their clever packaging. I sprayed a hefty amount of the product—at least 10 sprays—and tried for 3 minutes—the same amount of time I figured it would have taken for me to iron the t-shirt—to remove the wrinkles.

The end results were certainly better than nothing, leading me to believe the Downy Wrinkle Releaser would work well on less wrinkled items.

Who is the Downy Wrinkle Releaser Right for?

I could see keeping a bottle of the Downy Wrinkle Releaser in my desk drawer for instant touch-ups on skirt or pair of pants that is wrinkled from a day of sitting. It would also be good for traveling, when your clothes have gotten lightly wrinkled in your suitcase. A third scenario I can see where this product would be very beneficial is if you have small children running around, making a hot iron a dangerous thing to have around.

If you really, truly hated ironing, then this would also be a good product.

It would also work well on small items, like napkins, that don’t require much effort to get wrinkle-free.

Another advantage is that you don’t need to wait the three to five minutes for your iron to heat up.

What could be better about Downy Wrinkle Releaser?

I found the effort and time I extended in getting my very wrinkled T-shirt straightened comparable to the same amount it would have taken me to iron the T-shirt. Again, the t-shirt was super wrinkled, I don’t have anything in my closet that compares.
