Katie Cazorla, star of the TV Guide Network reality show Nail Files and owner of the Painted Nail in Los Angeles knows her stuff when it comes to nail tips and trends. Check out her show to watch her often hilarious interactions with her staff, celebrity clients and fiancé. I recently sat down with Katie to chat about her life as a nail expert, TV star and business owner.

How do you get polish to dry faster?

I am always one of the people who is in a hurry. I don't have time to sit there and sink into the chair and get a mani and pedi, though I love it when I do! I would say, for normal polish let it dry in between coats for at least like a minute or two.

I also recommend finishing with a cuticle oil. Cuticle oil helps the polish dry a little quicker. Wait two minutes after you apply your top coat so it doesn't smear.

What are some common mistakes people make when applying their own nail polish?

People always think if they want to get full coverage, they have to apply it on thick. With my polish I did a thicker formula to start with, so you really only have to do one coat. It's more of a jelly base, so it doesn't drip as easily. Simply let it dry for a minute, then do a top coat.

Also, make sure your polish isn't old. A lot of times clients will bring in their own polish and they've left it in the car and it's a hot and sticky mess. Polish doesn't have a shelf life of forever, it is paint. So don't leave them lying around in your car, gym bag. It's a cosmetic. You wouldn't leave an expensive tube of lipstick in your car cup holder, then you've spent $30 on something that is ruined. Take care of your beauty products and update them regularly.

My favorite saying is "Remember, your nails are jewels, not tools. Don't open bobby pins with them, don't scratch off price stickers with them.

How did you get into the business?

Nail salons in LA sucked. I was working a million jobs and let's be fair, it's not cheap to get a mani and pedi, unless you go to the corner salon, which can be sketchy. I feel like I'm better than that, but I couldn't afford to go to a spa. I do like to pamper myself, but I want to spend my money wisely. Finally I was like screw it. I went to nail school and later opened The Painted Nail.

What are some red flags about nail salon safety?

Don't get a pedicure at a place with spa chairs-the danger in the pipes is frightening. At a place with buckets, you'll never get anything gross. Even still they should be soaked in barbicide for a minimum of 10 minutes.

What are some trends for this upcoming season?

I love neons for fall! A lot of designers are incorporating neons for fall, even in their clothing. I hate when people say they like beige or gray, because I don't like tacky neon nails. If you have on a nice pantsuit and are working at a corporate job, neon polish can make you look super confident!

I like accent fingers. I'm a huge fan of the Kiss Nail Dress appliqués. If you make a mistake, can lift it and redo it. It's like instant nail art! Speaking of nail art is huge! It's not going anywhere. It's an instant conversation piece and has no age limits!
