Day to Night: Five Essentials

By Samantha Cabrera, About.com

These five essentials will make transitioning from day to night simple and fast. When you're out shopping, keep a metal checklist of what you have and what you don't, so the next time you're heading out of the office to a date, you can be ready in 15 minutes or less.

A Signature Scent

A signature scent is something every woman needs, and when it comes to going to a special event, this scent can give you the pick-me-up and confidence needed to waltz into a room with ease. While a day scent should also be an essential, having a "special" scent also lends itself to creating a night look. Viktor & Rolf's Flowerbomb is a fusion orchid and freesia, but the feminine notes are balanced by bergamot, making it an unusual, but stunning fragrance.

Stepping Out Heels

We'll call these "stepping out" heels, because let's face, it: we're talking about shoes that are meant to be seen. They may not be the most comfortable, so gauge your plans as to what shoes you'll wear. If you're taking a cab and doing dinner and drinks, those four inch Louboutins may work just fine. However, if you're not sure where the night is taking you, you might want to be a bit more modest. Shoes are a great way to experiment with fashion, as they can change a look with minimal effort, which is fantastic when you're short on time.

Metallic Clutch

Whether it's gold or silver, pewter or copper, a metallic clutch is a sure fire way to take your look to evening. Metallic is a huge trend, so you're able to find options at every price point. A great way to get more out of your purchase is to go with a metallic that has hints of both warm and cool tones, which allows you to wear it with both gold and silver metals.

Killer Cocktail Ring

The more over-the-top, the better! After all when you're jetting from one thing to the next, you don't have a ton of time to do the whole, "Does this really go with this?," thing. Take the guess work out of what jewelry to wear, buy wearing one statement piece. The easiest to wear? The elusive cocktail ring, which is flattering on everyone and under some circumstances can serve as a great conversation starter.

Black Eyeliner

A fierce eye is a great way to look ready for evening. While pencil liners might work for day, for real drama in a flash, look to a liquid liner. The result is an inky black lined eye that speaks volumes with little other makeup. Once you get the hang of handling the brush, creating evening eyes is a snap, and sure beats doing your makeup all over again.
