Natural Instincts Week 2 Color Refresher-Review

By April 13, 2011

Follow me on:

Clairol before and afterEarlier this week I did something I thought I would never do, color my hair myself. Well, it wasn't exactly by myself, but it was out of a box. Courtesy of Clairol Natural Instincts Week 2 Color Refresher, I was invited to the Marie Robinson salon to experience the new product. What I love about this at-home hair color is that in addition to the regular hair color, it contains a two week refresher pouch. As anyone woman knows, whether you're coloring your hair at home or at the salon, the two to three week mark is when colored hair can start to lose it's shine.

Ready to try it yourself? Here's what I learned from Robinson:

  • To pick a hair color, go by the before and after photos on the back of the box, not the photo of the model on the front. I was surprised and more than a bit nervous when Robinson selected a golden blonde shade for me. But because my base color was darker and red, it worked to brighten my hue and cover my roots and grays.
  • Don't wash your hair before you color it--preferably not more than 48 hours. Your scalp's natural oils are the best protection against irritation from dyes.
  • When applying the color, start with the face-framing pieces first, then work your way to the back.
  • If your hair is long like mine, you should buy two boxes of color to ensure you'll have enough product for even coverage.

I personally couldn't be more thrilled with the results, and thanks to the Week 2 Color Refresher, I know I'll get to enjoy them for longer.

I have used Natural Instincts #13 Lt Brown for years and have been very satisfied. Approx 2 weeks ago I colored my hair as usual then 2 weeks later used the week 2 Color
Fresh. It was a total disaster! My hair turned orange.
I called customer help line and was told to wash it twice and that the orange would be removed. It wasn’t. I called again and was told to use # 14 Ash Brown and that it would cover the orange.
I will do that tonight and hope that it turns out o.k.

I do hope that no one else has to go through the frustration that I experienced. BJF

I’ve also used #13 for years. When I used the refresher pack, it turned my hair a not so “natural” orange. I should have used my “instincts” and not dyed my hair with the new refresher pack just before grad and photos, but no…I had to show up with my purple sweater and orange hair. It also knotted up my hair so badly, I had to use a good conditioner to comb it out.

On Saturday, I called the Clairol questions line and was told to buy a hot oil treatment and put it in cold for 30 minutes and to wash my hair daily until the colour disappears. No thanks, I wanted it gone immediately. I washed it with equate brand dandruff shampoo (foam from washing was tinted orange so I knew it was working) twice and once with exact goat’s milk moisturizing bar soap. Then used a good conditioner and my hair was back to normal, although it will need to be dyed again.

Thank you for posting your comment. When I called Clairol this morning I was told that there weren’t many complaints about this sort of thing. Now that I’ve checke on the net there are several complaints and even a recall. Our #13 should have been on that recall! Really makes one loose confidence in the Clairol brand.

I have used Natural Instincts for years and loved it! I tried the refresher packet and HATED it! It is very messy to use and didn’t do a thing for my color. Please bring back the regular packaging WITHOUT 2 week color refresher!!
I would hate to have to switch to another product but will, if I can’t find the regular, former box of Natural Instincts. Why would you change a product that is already a winner?

(4) Jo Ann says:

I’ve used #14 Natural Instincts for a long time. The color fresh packet turned my hair a bright ORANGE RED! What an absolute mess! I emailed Clairol about my ugly experience and asked why they would put an orange-red color fresh packet in a “Cool Tone” box. About 3 weeks later I received a reply. They stated that the condition of my hair could be a factor and the way I had applied the color fresh packet. In other words, it was all my fault. Please note, Natural Instincts is made in Mexico. They’ve lost a faithful customer.

(5) Maureen says:

I used 6C (light brown) brass free Natural Instincts. Two weeks later I used the conditioning creme that is suppose to add color pigments back to your hair and it was a DISASTER! My hair turned a bright BRASS ORANGE RED! I had to wash my hair 7 times to get most of that horrible color out. Why in the world would Clairol change a product that had excellent results to an inferior now product! When I first bought this so called new and improved hair color I really wasn’t too keen on having to do something with my hair just 2 weeks later because I have to set up to color That means picking up bath mats, covering door with a plastic cloth in case of a splatter that could stain carpeting or clothing. When I color my hair I want it to last for weeks not even having to put a dark color creme in 2 weeks later. I had TRUSTED Clairol for so many years and never had a problem til now. Now I have to start searching for another product.

(6) Redhead NOW says:

Too many people have had the orange / red experience with the refresher packet. I too have used Natural Instincts many time with great results. It sounded like a great idea to refresh in between colorings, so I did it this morning. It is SO BAD I actually considered not coming to work today. Comments from too many people to make me believe it’s “the condition of the hair”. Why would Clairol mess with a good thing?!!

(8) JP says:

I had a similar experience with two brown colors (dark and medium) I used in the past. Not only is the color awful but the product completely dried out my hair unlike ever before. When I called to complain was told there were no changes in the formulas just a new box. Wrong! Even the directions are different – use on dry, not wet hair and all over, not depending on when you last colored. One representative hung up on me. Another suggested that I must have done something to make the problem happen. Despite sending a refund, this response by the company has lost me as a client for the foreseeable future. Another friend had a similar experience. I found an older box recently and the color was great. Wish I had bought more before the update!

(9) Phyllis says:

I should have listened to myself when I opened the refresher pack tonight and thought, “Hm, that looks awfully red.”
My now dark blonde hair is FLAMING RED/ORANGE!
I’m so ticked off. I’m now googling how to get it out.

I used the 2 week refresher just before a Labor Day vacation and spent the weekend with orangish red hair. What a disappointment. Someone should sue!! I normally use # 14.

(11) Jane says:

Hated the Refresher too. Will continue to buy this product but only on sale and just throw away the refresher.

(12) Ginny says:

I had the same experience this morning with the Color Refresher packet for 6C Brass Free – red/orange hair. Has anything worked to remove it? My first day of school and my 3rd graders must have thought I stepped out of their new crayon boxes!

(13) jo says:

wow. I’m glad I looked this up. I was going to use it in a few days. SO glad I found out! I do still like their color.. but won’t be using the refresher ever! What a bummer!

(14) Leslie Frye says:

Just read the about the refresher. Fortunately, I read the comments, as I did not have refresher on my package. I made my own…I have short hair, so I only use half the solution…..I made an extremely small solution with a part of the other half. I had previously frosted my hair a couple days before. I wroked the solution through with my fingers…combed some of it through, left it on five minutes…It turned out great. Gave my hair some body and did not wipe out the frosting…

(15) Mel B. says:

I too used the color refresher last night our of a 6C Light Brown box. I thought it was a great idea to have a spruce up in between colorings. WRONG!!! I got out of the shower and could not believe what it had done! My first clue should have been in the shower when it turned my palms ompa louma orange. (I didn’t wear the gloves) I was so upset. I loved the brown the 6C had given me, but the refresher turned it a orange-red color. VERY brassy and not a good look. Some one above said they used dandruff shampoo, so I jumped back into the shower for a 20 hard lathering of my hair with Head and Shoulders 2in1. The suds were orange just like the other review said. It did help a bit. It was not near as bright orange, but was still very brassy. To add to that, it wasn’t even uniformly orange in my hair. It was blotchy and did not stick to the very ends, nor the inch of natural roots that I had. This is a VERY BAD PRODUCT. I do love the color and will be re-dying it tonight, but will never ever use the color refresher again.

September 19, 2011 at 10:16 pm
(16) snoopy says:

I have used Natural Instincts Light Brown (#13) for over 10 years. I always loved the color and have received many compliments on it. I noticed that lately it didn’t cover as well as it used to and the color didn’t last as long. Also, there didn’t seem to be enough color to cover my hair and I would run out before I was done. (My hair was the same length it has always been.) The color didn’t seem to have the same “highlight” effect that it used to have either. The color looked flat and darker than normal.

Well…..the last time I brought this product, I purchased the box with the refresher packet. I used it tonight. :( :( :( :( :(

I am horrified. My hair is reddish. It looks so unnatural and terrible. I’m going to try washing it over and over tomorrow until this hideous red color disappears. I am so disappointed and disgusted! Why, oh why, did they change their product. I should have known better when I opened the refresher and it was reddish. But I thought I would give it a shot. I thought that Clairol knew what they were doing. Boy, was I wrong!!!!!!!

I don’t know if I will ever use a Clairol product again. I DEFINITELY will never use that refresher again. It is the worst thing I have ever used. I want to warn anyone that uses #13…….DO NOT USE THE REFRESHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THROW IT AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU WILL GREATLY REGRET IT IF YOU USE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish I were warned before using. :(

(17) Lisa says:

What on earth were they thinking! Totally different formula (even though they will not admit it), apply to dry hair (used to be wet), color fades within 10 days (used to last me 6 weeks depending on shampoos), hair feels terrible, and whoeer thought the refresher was a good idea should be FIRED!!!!!!!!!!. What on EARTH were they thinking!!!!!!

October 2, 2011 at 3:36 pm
(18) Deb says:

I haven’t even got to the refresher yet. I just colored my hair with my usual 12A and thought “what is wrong with this stuff?”. I was amazed at all the stuff that came in the box, but while I was waiting, I was looking at the box and noticed it didn’t say anything about lasting 24 shampoos. It looks like it might have turned into a permanent color, which is not what I wanted. I only left it in for 10 minutes but when I washed it out, it felt awful – dry and stiff. I’ve never had that experience before. It always felt really nice and soft and thick. Not this time.

And reading all the comments about the refresher, I threw it away! Looks likes I’ll be looking for another brand.

October 3, 2011 at 2:06 pm
(19) Kitty says:

This new formula is AWFUL! It fades within 2 weeks tops and you touch it up with orange refresher that looks appalling! So next I used L’Oreal Preference permanent which further dried out my hair.

Furthermore, they packaged the 28 day formula so much like the permanent color that I am sure people will buy the wrong one accidentally.

Someone really messed and needs to explain this because the error is so bad on Clairol’s part. Get the old 28 day 20 minute product back…with some apologetic coupons to win us back because I’m moving on to L’Oreal.

(20) Joanne says:

I’ve used Natural Instincts for about 10 years…# 6 Linen. My hair always turned out nice. I recently tried the New Creme version and like everyone else my hair turned orange and felt awful…..won’t be buying it anymore because I wouldn’t want to have the same result again.

(21) tamara says:

Natural Instincts Shade 13 – Suede – was not a part of the recent Natural Instincts Recall but it should be. The refresher pack turned my hair bright orange. I called customer service to seek advice and they told me to wash hair and apply hot oil treatments. Parts of hair are still orange after about 16 washings and treatments. Customer service blamed it on my porous hair and said it is not their fault since I chose to use the refresher pack. BEWARE

(22) Summer says:

OH NO! I’ve been using #16 (spiced tea) for years now. I noticed that the packaging changed and didn’t look ANYTHING like the old color. I’m tempted to give it a try – BUT so many reviews say that it ends up being more like a permanent dye? That’s horrible! Has anyone found a good substitute? What I liked about the old product is that it faded very naturally and I never had a root line. Does the new formula create a root-line? I don’t know what to do! I always thought Natural Instincts was the only non-permanent product? Does anyone know differently?

(23) S Bug says:

I can’t believe that so many other people had this experience. I had the experience with just the REGULAR Natural Instincts. Mind you, I have been dying AND highlighting my own hair for years and have gotten really good at it. I usually just purchase any medium brown and I’m good. I decided to perhaps go a tad red so I purchased a Natural Instinct product that was supposed to have a little red in it. OMG! NOT SO NATURAL! It was more like Hot Pink/Red. So, not wanting to mix makers, I got a dark color of Natural Instincts and it turned my hair a dark, glowing PURPLE color. I finally used a VERY dark Nice N Easy to get rid of all of the color but it burned my scalp so much (probably from the multi coloring which you’re not supposed to do). I then highlighted my hair as usual and the highlights are glow in the dark reddish/pink/copper color. It looks SO fake. I’m horrified but don’t want to mess with it until I’ve given my scalp some time to heal. Any ideas? I’ve heard of “red out”…..or I might try highlighting one more time since the highlighting solution doesn’t touch my scalp. Thoughts?

(25) Allison says:

Wow, I’m so glad I read these reviews before I went ahead and USED my 2 week color refresher (it’s been 2 weeks since I colored my hair lol so I was going to use it tonight). I actually read somewhere on the Clairol site, I believe, that earlier this year, some of the Color Refreshers were recalled on MANY of the shades, because some of the Refreshers were not a match for the shades they were packaged in–which explains why some may have ended up with a too-light, too-orangey etc. shade. I know that the box I just used was one that I bought a few months ago, so I’m going to err on the cautious side and just chuck the things.

(26) Maisie says:

The new formula is horrible. And I can’t find the color I used for years. It leaves your hair like straw and hard to comb. Also, they’ve made it very confusing with different kinds like there’s one that’s permanent. Anyone know a good non-permanent alternative? The refresher made my hair more orange and straw-like.

October 25, 2011 at 10:42 am
(27) Ann says:

The big change I’ve noticed is that my normally very straight hair is now wavy and even a bit frizzy. Has anyone else noticed a change in their hair texture with the new formula? I want to reassure people that the new version of Brass Free light brown (6) and lightest brown (6.5) are not permanent. In fact, I think the color fades a little more quickly now. Don’t use the refresher packet unless you like an orange tint to your hair.

October 25, 2011 at 1:09 pm
(28) Cathryn says:

I (and mom) also have had the same bad experiences with the “New and Improved” Clairol Natural Instincts. Why would Clairol put a red refresher in light brown hair color? The new color doesn’t last nearly as long and appears to dry out hair badly. When Clairol was contacted they indicated that it was a personal hair problem, that they had received no other complaints. Would I like a coupon for another box? Too funny…one frustrating and embarrassing mistake is enough. Give me my money back or bring back the product that works!

October 25, 2011 at 2:46 pm
(29) Kristen says:

I used 23r Raspberry Creme dye two weeks ago, and its time to use the color refresher packet, but now I’m unsure if I should use it. The only thing with me tho is that my hair is supposed to be red after using the dye. Has anyone colored their hair with a red formula and had good results with the refresher packet?

(30) Jennifer says:

I have been using the same shade of Natural Instincts for a few years now. In August, exactly 1 week before my vacation to the beach, I discovered that all the boxes had changed and my regular color was no where to be found. I had to guess and pick a box that looked most similar to what I had been using. DISASTER!! My normally caramel colored hair (which was what was indicated on the box) was turned almost jet black!!! I have switched to Loreal and will never go back.

(31) sharon says:

I used the color refresher today (about 5 weeks after the original color) and it turned my hair a funny-looking orangey-red. I look like Carrot Top. I’ll never use it again. I’m going to a professional to try to get the color right and I’ll NEVER use Clairol hair color again. I’m going to try to wash it with a clarifying shampoo and just hope that it doesn’t get worse. To top it off, I’m going on vacation tomorrow and this really gripes me. I tried to call Clairol’s hotline but they were closed. With this product you’d think they’d be open 24/7.

I love Natural Instincs hair dye and have been using it for years. I recently had dyed my hair the Egyptian Plum color and absolutely loved it and thought how great it was that in two weeks the refresher would refresh my color…. NO that didnt happened it turned my scalp and roots of my hair fiery orange and i am soo upset. I wish i would of read all of the comments before using it ……… so after 3 super scrubbing washes the orange has faded somewhat! very upset…….will still continue to use the dye but just throw away the refresher!!!!!!

(36) Dis_Satisfied says:

I’ve been collecting color fresh packets – after having the unpleasant experience of spreading “peanut butter” on my hair – with the same orange hair result as everyone else. I jumped on-line to see if there was any other use for the silly packets. Now I wonder if these packets are all the same, regardless of what color # it was packaged with. I can’t see any indication on the packet that it came from a #18 box. Reluctantly I guess I’ll be looking for a different brand & hair color to use.

Just bought one box of clairol brass free natural instincts 10 min 28 shampoo 5c med brown. I also purchased Garnier HerbaShine w/ bamboo extract 510 med ash brown 10 min 28 shampoos. Don’t know what to use? I have been reading good and horrid results about both. I have been just streaking or frosting my hair with a cap for the past year or two and I’m a natural med mousy brown underneath. I used to use a product from Sally’s that was a Clairol brand with great conditioners. can’t think of the exact name right now but it always left my hair super conditioned and shiny. This is when I used to go darkest brown, I didn’t have the time to swing by Sallys so the drug store it was, maybe I should just hold off until I can get the dye I used to use from the supply store? Any ideas are greatly appreciated since I’m dying over bleached streaks. Thanks to all of us “product testers” out there. :-)

(39) Patricia says:

(sigh)–I wish I read this before! Like many others, I have used this product, and ONLY this product for many years (black). When I opened the new product with the new refresh pack, it came out purple. I recoiled in horror and did not use because I was concerned that it would make my hair purple. Weeks went by and I needed to use it and figured, “well, I paid for it, and so I should use it” I re-read the instructions more carefully which say (under step #5) “The color of the Revitalizer product does not represent your final hair color result.” So, this made me more secure that my hair would not turn purple and I plunged ahead. The result: thankfully it did not appear to make my hair purple but it did turn my scalp purple! And it did NOTHING to cover the gray. The changes Clairol has made to this product is not for the better (a) revitalizer stains the scalp purple (b) new product does not cover gray effectively (c) the creme is not as easy to use/distribute as the prior liquid formula (d) the new product does not go by the same names as older one and the packaging should tell you what it converts to (for example there is a #2 black or a #37 black–before it was midnight and there was only ONE midnight). This is the only hair coloring product I have ever used and the changes make me want to find another brand: FAST!

I wish I had read these reviews, first! I am a salon devotee but after switching stylists and not being pleased with his work, even after a follow up attempt I decided to throw caution to the wind and deepen my color with Clairol NI in the color 6- a light brown. My color looked great. The refresher pack however turned my hair burgundy red.

(43) Traci says:

I could see why Anne Fritz raves this product so much, her hair is all ready orangery-red, so she probably had no issues with the 2 week refresher. She wouldn’t be able to tell if it’s orange in her hair since it’s the same color as the refresher! Anyone with orange hair, her skin tone and neutral beige outfit in the “after’ picture will probably love it too. We should all send her our before and after pics. It looks like Clairol did a ‘one size fits all gimmick’ to fool us into thinking we were getting a new and improved product without any consideration for the consumer and their varying skin tones and hair colors. Whose ever relative on staff that came up with the idea should be….(whatever term you feel fits). I have olive complexion and dark hair and now I am a bright orange including my scalp. I have an important interview for a job tomorrow and I just wanted to refresh my color. It looks like a joke. How are the people interviewing me going to take me seriously with this hair? Clairol may have cost me a job! This is inexcusable and I truly think with all their experience in the hair color business they should have tested this product on all sorts of women with varying hair colors before launching it and putting it on the shelves. I am embarrassed to have trusted them, especially since I am both a hairdresser and a marketing major and I am familiar with both areas, so I advise users of this product to research and try something else, I know I will!

DON’T USE the 2 WEEK REFRESHER!!!! I have used Medium Ash Brown (24) for years. I wanted my hair color to be “refreshed” and to look nice for dinner out on New Years Eve, but was horrified. My fairly dark hair turned orangy/red for NEW YEARs EVE! Luckily I had another box of the same hair color and used it right away to cover it up. It helped but was still not what it should look like. I don’t know why Clariol would still be putting this packet in their semi permanent hair color.

I’m so glad I came here to read everyone’s comments on the 2 week refresher. I was going to use it this morning, but first I decided to come here, and I’m so thankful. If my hair had turned orange, I would have flipped out. I will never use it!

(46) Yvonne says:

I’m so sorry that others have had to go through a bad experience to warn others of what the 2 week color refresher does. Like one of the other women here, I was googling better directions for the 2 week color refresher because the directions seem to be deliberately vague: “Shampoo hair as usual.” (What does that mean? Should I be shampooing my hair abnormally for the two weeks before the refresher?)
“Put on gloves.” (While I’m in the shower, or afterward with dry hair?)
“Apply entire sachet and distribute evenly through hair.” (How can such a tiny packet of color be distributed evenly through anything?)

Thank you for sharing your stories, or I would have used the color refresher. It feels to me like the directions are deliberately vague so that the company can blame the bright orange result on the customer rather than on a poor product. I am pleased with my new hair color from the first dyeing process (#22 medium auburn brown), have gotten many complements that a darker and slightly redder hair brings out my eyes, but I’m definitely NOT going for orange. Refresher pack in garbage!

Have used/trusted many, many Clairol products since two family members graduated beauty school over 30 years ago. Today was the first time I tried the Week 2 Color Fresh portion of the Natural Instincts #28 Dark Brown color kit (past two times I forgot about them and pitched the packets). Wish I would have read this thread first….I too have HORRIBLE ORANGE HAIR now! My using this Clairol product has as been a good laugh for my 50+ husband and friends!!!

Orange hair as well. What did you people do to get it out?

Oh. My Gosh. I am speechless. I have been using #22 – Medium Auburn Brown for the last few months. I’ve even used the refresher and it was fine. Until tonight. Yep, you guessed it. ORANGE! I am MORTIFIED right now. Now mind you, I’m half Irish and half Native American so I am normally a lighter shade redhead with a tan/gold skin tone. Now picture THAT with orange hair. I don’t even know what to say right now. WHAT DO I DO?????

(50) Breanna says:

I recently decided to dye my hair a medium brown which came out more as a dark brown, I loved the color anyway. 2 weeks later I used the color refresh pack to spruce up the color a bit and when I got out of the shower I noticed my hair had a very red tint to it, although it was mostly on the top of my head. It was not horrible, but I just don’t like any red tones in my hair. I am dissapointed that the color refresher was not the same as the color I dyed my hair. I will never use it again.

I also used the Natural Instincts Color fresh. My hair is now bright orange. I am going to a professional as soon as I can get an appointment. I am so disappointed that I didn’t read the comments first. I will never buy this product again. They should be ashamed to tell everyone that it is their fault.

My Rite-Aid had a sign near Natural Instincts stating that Clairol is recalling the product because of mismatched refresher packets. I moved the taped piece of warning paper directly in front of the boxes cause I barely noticed it where it was located. I saw Natural Instincts at Target today & they were marked down about half price, but not recalled.

List of colors recalled on April 12th. They’re offering a refund. Go get your money, ladies!

F’UGLY, BRASSY BRONZEY RED alll through my hair. Thanks to last night’s ‘color refreshing’ misadventure. I wish someone could sue!! I even did a good trusty at-home clarifying treatment (dump apple-cider vinegar all over hair…makes it shiny at least…) and saw a bunch of the reddish dye come out. Then, I even followed THAT with a Head and Shoulders shampoo escapade that took out a little more color. Oh, dont get me wrong, my hair definitely is shiny now. BUT STILL HAVE RED STREAKS!! Im so pissed. But not here to try to add more complaint, just want to try and help anyone else that has recently had an unfortunate foray into the disaster that is Clairol’s Color Refresher. My advice on the best clarifying treatments without ruining your hair?……………………….From most GENTLE to more POWERFUL……………..

April 20, 2012 at 12:43 pm
(55) Alex says:

.1) Apple Cider Vinegar. Absolutely amazing for shine, there’s nothing better on the market and I suggest doing this every month even if you dont have a color faux pas to correct. ESPECIALLY awesome if you are a hairspray/volumizer foam/mousse fanatic like myself. It will get all the residue out, and you will notice so much weight taken off your hair…it’ll have so much more volume. 2) The well-known dandruff shampoo trick. I like the Head & Shoulders Restoring Shine version with plant extracts. 3) Prell Shampoo. I love this stuff for getting all the styling gunk out– it’s a cheap classic that you can find at most drugstores/grocery chains. (It’s in a green bottle) 3) The most intense stuff (but not too intense that I wont use it on my OWN hair) is the oh-so-effective Neutrogena Anti-Residue shampoo. It comes in a little box & should be at most stores. You dont need a whole handful like normal shampoo. I’d start w/ about half the amt of product you normally would use when washing. And my last tip that I just cant help but share, it’s my beloved COCONUT OIL!! I’m a beauty-tip enthusiast & this is one of my staples in my bathroom cupboard. Use it as a deep conditioner after all this clarifying craziness, but concentrate most towards the ends of your hair where it’s most dry. Use a gentle shampoo to rinse with warm water & condition normally. When you rinse conditioner, end with a shot of ice cold water over strands before getting out– and dont rustle your hair like a wild woman with a towel– Breakage city! (I’ve found that using an old tshirt to wrap and squeeze excess water out of hair works amazingly for shine). And lastly, this coconut oil is a God-send for skin too, so give it a try. Naturally non-comedogenic ;) And if you’re feeling conventional, it’s wonderful for cooking too! Hope this helps, ladies!! :) Comment me back for more tips

I used the light blonde Sahara for years. When the new box came out I used it thinking it would be the same. NOT! I did use the color refresher the first time and it ruined the color- the same icky orangy color that everyone else has mentioned. To cover it up, I used Loreal Preference natural lightest blonde and it worked okay. The next time I used the Nat. Inst. Sahara I did not use the color refresher but the color was still wrong– like a no color greyish. The formula has obviously been changed for the worse. I had five boxes – took them all
back to the store for a refund. I will never use this product again. I now use Loreal Preference light natural blonde. It does dry hair – just have to use lots of conditioner. I’m not crazy about using a permanent color but what else is there? I may just let color grow off and go natural. WHY DID CLARIOL MESS WITH THE ORIGINAL? If it ain’t broke – don’t fix it!!

(57) Diane says:

Don’t believe Clariol’s recall. Its just not the refresher pack. The color formula has been changed, the instructions changed. It was last summer before the recall when I made the mistake of using the new improved color and the refresher pack. The refresher pack turned my hair a orangy shade. Tried using without refresher pack and it was still a hot mess.
Not the same shade that I have used for years. Clariol lost a customer. I spent a small fortune on Natural Instincts over the years. Not anymore!

I am totally stunned. Have used the color refresh the past couple of times with great results, but am now afraid to try it again. Has anybody had good results? by the way I alternate between #18 Pecan & #21G Caramel Creme.

Thanks for saving me, i wonder why didnt anyone do a patch test on the refresher…. I am not gona use the refresher anyways, but i wana do a patch test before throwing it out.
i have dry curly hair n used medium brown 20, it is darker than medium brown, but i have light brown hair, so i get a nice visible brown, but not medium at all…. but i am happy with the color.

I am shocked reading all the comments.I have been using # 14 for several years and loved it, especially the conditioner. A couple of weeks ago I used the new formula, it came out ok and yesterday I used the color enhancer and now I am a redhead! But it’s not all over since the amount does not cover all of the hair. It looks horrible. I am sorry I didn’t read the comments before I used the color enhancer. One advice: don’t use the color enhancer package!!!! It’s time to change to another product. I know, I will.

(61) Dee says:

I’m wondering what shade everyone is using that their hair is turning orange. I use natural instincts to dye my hair dark brown and have never had a problem with the color refresher. In fact, i love the refresher packet. It makes my hair soft, shiny and the color it was two weeks before when i dyed it! I know that if you dye your hair blonde it almost always looks orange until you use a blue/purple shampoo… Something to try.

(62) Now An Orange Head says:

Used to be light brown, have fine hair that doesn’t hold color well, so was glad that a color refresher existed. Not so glad when after two minutes my hair turned orange. Why doesn’t Clairol warn you about that? I thought it was a defective product but think that is just the way the product is intended to be—that “refresh” means orange. Makes no sense to me.

(63) marlene says:

I wish I had read the reviews before trying the color refresher! My hair is now orange! I have been using the shade 6.5 (Lightest ash brown) with good results, though never tried the color refresh until yesterday. I was worried when I saw the deep red/brown color, but thought I would give it a try. BIG MISTAKE!! I will try washing it out with harsh shampoo, and try the vinegar solution others have suggested to get out the disgusting orange color. Why would they put orange color pigments in cool ash hair color boxes!!

I’m done with Clairol!

(64) Lisa says:

If I had read the comments first, I probably would not have even tried the color refresher, but I just finished and I loved it. I used the medium blonde color about 2 weeks ago and tried the refresher just now. I haven’t noticed any color change, but loved the smell and the way it conditioned my hair. I actually went online to see if I could purchase it without the whole coloring kit.

(65) Vesta says:

I have also used Natural Instincts for years. The new product is terrible compared to the old. I had no problem with the refresher turning my hair orange. However, the color is not as good or as vibrant as the prior product and is not lasting as long. Is there any other temporary hair color product on the market? I will look around.

(66) Pilar says:

I used the product and it did not last even a week. I was on vacation and excited to try the week 2 refresher , which I had put in my suitcase. It looked awfully reddish and I hesitated… but the instructions say do not judge the the color by what how it looks…so I used it and had red hair for over a week- I do not look good in red hair!!! IT was easy to use and made my hair shiney and nice- but why the red color? After I returned home, I tried a different color and again the week 2 color was reddish and turned my hair red. I give up I don;t understand why they don’t just put the right colros into the product.

I alternate between brands, but stick with light to meduim auburn shades. I recently bought the Natural Instincts “Medium Auburn”, without noticing the small print: “Same great shade as Raspberry Creme!”. My hair turned out practically hot pink! It’s now several weeks later, and the color is much nicer, but roots are coming in. I never used the Color Fresh packet at week 2, so I wondered if I could use it to do my roots & decided to ask Google…boy am I glad I found this page!

I too have used the 2wk.refreshner and had same result’s!
Washing out as best I could .Am curious as to why they (clairol) instruced to apply to dry hair? Not wet. Buthold on people, I last used this product a few mo.(3) that had the 2 wk refreshner pouch. I would like to know if anyone has long term affect’s? My hair is falling out!!!!!!!!!! exactly where I applied product! I’ve alway’s, alway’s had long thick hair. Now u can see scalp
exactly at root’s where I applied some and another place.
I am so upset, don’t know what to do! Pat C

Used the refresher this morning, two weeks after coloring with 6.5C brass-free lightest brown. DISASTER. Dark orange-copper blotches, and my bangs are pretty much solid orange. I CANNOT believe that Clairol has known about this problem for so long and done NOTHING! I called, they recommended the hot oil treatment, cold for 30 minutes. I shampooed twice, STILL ORANGE! Will try the dandruff shampoo next, can’t go to work like this on Monday. Will have cost me over ten dollars in triage attempts, DAMMIT! Done with stinkin’ Clairol, boneheads!

(74) KB says:

I use the color refresh every single time and it brings the color up (mine is amber shimmer, lightest golden brown) to a slightly reddish tint that I am going for anyway. This particular color fades to a dark strawberry blond, so the color refresh is perfect for getting the newly colored roots to match the rest of my hair. And my hair is soooo ridiculously soft once I’m done. I’m actually shocked at how many bad reviews there are here, because I’ve never had anything but good experiences with this whole hair color line.

I dyed and frosted my hair a week apart, had the refresher in my shower used it, yes orange and red highlights appeared. I plan on washing my hair with head and shoulders and using white vinegar, I will let you know if it helps.

I have been looking EVERYWHERE for Clairol Natural Instincts Loving Care non permanent hair color and could not find it. I thought I was going crazy. I loved that product !! Now I see they changed their formula and added some stupid 2 week refresher and the price is twice as much as the old product !! I used to just use as much as I wanted out of the squeeze bottle. Didn’t have to mix a thing. Product lasted a long time. Now you have to mix the product and it’s supposed to be one use. I guess they figure they will make much more money this way….but I will not use the new product at all and from the comments, I don’t think others will either. Bring back the old Loving Care. Please !

(77) Debbie says:

I used Loreal Brass Banisher to get rid of that horrid orange/red from the refresher that I used. I was shocked at all the complaints…should have looked at the internet first, but trusted the product. Very expensive lesson. You then have to re-color after the brass banisher with your color. I am very. disappointed in Clairol….wish another company would make semi permanent color, until then I will buy my color at Sally’s Beauty Supply.

(78) isha says:

wow, it’s so brutal to hear how many people are having awful experiences with this product – mine is the exact opposite. i love that they provide a semi-permanent toner in with the colour so much that i am now only buying it for the refresher, and not using the colour at all.

i have been colouring my hair for years, and at 33 am far more grey than i’d like. i find that the colour refresher (aka the toner) covers my greys in a way that other semis don’t, without doing the damage of actually dyeing my hair.

honestly, if any of you are happy with your colour but are not using your two week refreshers, and would be willing to send them to me for the cost of shipping plus half the price of your colour, i would be thrilled! it’s got to cost less than buying the whole box just for the refresher, especially since i use two packets at a time!

thank you!

(79) missdee says:

I used baking soda mixed with a good clarifying shampoo to remove the unwanted orange/red from the refresher pack. Have heard dandruff shampoo may help also. I for one am a fan of the color refresher since I use natural instincts to cover my bleached out blonde and as it fades I get a greenish grey cast. The red in the refresher pack balances those tones out nicely!
