The Instyler: friend or foe?

Thursday August 7, 2008
Infomercials are incredibly entertaining at times, and this one especially caught my eye over the weekend. The Instyler is a flat iron/curling iron combo that is supposed to straighten, curl, add volume and flip your hair in any direction. Now I've seen contraptions that claim to do the same before, but The Instyler has an actual celebrity (even if she is a minor one!) in their commercial, so maybe we can trust that it works?

Because my own hair is rather thick and wavy, I'm thinking of taking the plunge and trying The Instyler for myself. With bristles, it gently pulls hair straight, following up with heat to create a sleek, smooth head of hair. If any of you have experience with The Instyler, let 15 Minute Fashion know! Cutting down the time I spend styling my hair is something I want; wasting my money on a product full of empty promises isn't!

(1) Mrs. Smith says:

I ordered this product… when you are checking out you are offered the “professional” rapid heat version for extra money which I ordered. As far as heat, it gets hot alright, but it is raw metal and I have gotten used to ceramic/non hair burning instruments - and won’t be going back. I really tried using it but the rolling cylinder is really ackward. I can do much better with my 1 inch wide ceramic coated flat iron with a flick of my wrist. Also you know how flat irons and curling irons have tips that you can hold onto to help you use them? Well the instyler metal is fully exposed so you have to be very careful when using it with one hand to keep from burning yourself… it is too complicated to use. I give it a 4 out of 10.

(2) Carolyn says:

Thanks Mrs Smith for the review! I was interested after seeing the commercial, but your review has helped me to change my mind. Appreciate that.

(3) Elyzabeth says:

Not to disagree with Mrs. Smith, but I bought the InStyler because my hair is thin and fine and it promised to make hair like mine fuller. Honestly, I’ll try just about anything that looks like it will help my hair. Yes, it was hot to the touch and took some time to figure out how to work it, but once I practiced with it, I really loved it. It gives me gorgeous hair. My daughter has thicker hair in a layered cut and she loves it, too, so we both give it a ‘thumbs-up’. We would recommend it.

(4) Charlotte says:

Thanks Elyzabeth for your review!
I just ordered my instyler and now im “patiently” waiting for it. I’ve heard a good number of reviews here and there about the instyler and they all fall along the lines of what Elyzabeth said.

Carolyn don’t be discouraged by one review, any new product takes getting used to. give it try and you might get a different outlook from Mrs Smith. And im not saying Mrs Smith’s review is wrong, all im saying don’t shut something down completely because of 1 review

(5) Mrs. Smith (again) says:

Another thing. The cranky churning sound it makes while rotating is annoying, and if you are not careful keeping your hair in the middle of the barrel - the tiny groove between the tip and the barrel will catch strands of hair that will wrap around until breaking. Just be careful - this was too much work and too much to think about in doing hair. We want uncomplication. So long story short - I returned them both and get this… as soon as I called the company to get my mandatory authorization return number the rep asked me to try it a little longer to get the hang of it and when I said “oh no thankyou” she asked me can she offer me a discount! So be ready… (you also have to pay a restocking charge when you return it) Wait awhile until a lot of people buy it and come online to give there opinion. Then you’ll have to weigh the pros and cons because it’s not easy figuring out which comments are actually legit versus the comments from the company’s ownership who has a stocked warehouse and a vested interest in making sure this product gets sold.

(6) 15minutefashion says:

Does anyone know how long this product has been out? I’ve only seen the commercial a few times (a.k.a. I want to make sure it’s sticking around before I take the plunge and order).

(7) Sally says:

I, too, just recently saw the Instyler. I like the idea of a brush. That’s why I bought the Maxiglide, but I found it too bulky to use. Also, the teeth on the plate pulled my hair. I have a Chi, but I’m still looking for “the one” that will be easy on my hair and easy to use.

August 17, 2008 at 1:21 am
(8) Charlotte says:

Sally, i too have a chi but still looking for “the one”. the chi is good but its not as good as when i first got it

I’m hoping the instyler will live up to its promise. the science behind it makes sense that why i ordered it. It was shipped out 3 days ago so i should be receiving it soon

I will make sure to post a detailed review here for everyone. i wont leave anything out.

August 17, 2008 at 11:05 am
(9) Becky says:

Well, if you decided to keep the product it will end up costing you $135! Although I have never used the product, it is hard for me to believe it is worth so much….especially if it isn’t ceramic.

August 17, 2008 at 4:43 pm
(10) Nell says:

I love my Instyler! My naturally coarse and slightly wiry hair is smooth and shiny with just one pass. Flat irons made my hair too FLAT but the Instyler rounds it beautifully.

August 18, 2008 at 10:28 pm
(11) DLR says:

I’ve seen that commercial too, and was interested in the product, but the price shown on telly $14.98 is only to TRY it, not to BUY it. I’m leery about that. How much does it cost if you decide to keep it?

August 19, 2008 at 11:50 am
(12) NSL says:

Dear DLR,
If you go to their website, getinstyler.com, you will see that at the very bottom of the screen it says you’ll get charged 3 payments of 39.99 plus $15 for shipping - that’s $135 total. But you get to keep BOTH instylers for that price. Thus, if you get a girlfriend interested, it would be $68 each. I’ve been thinking about orgering with my mom, but ahven’t been convinced either way by the limited number of customer reviews available.

August 19, 2008 at 9:57 pm
(13) Kristine says:

Well, I ordered my InStyler on August 9th and according to my account with them, they shipped it on August 13th. I decided to pay one lump sum:

$119.97 - the unit as a buy one get one free

$19.95 - 2 for 1 Rapid Pro Heat Upgrade
$9.95 - 3 Year Extended Warranty
$5.95 - Priority Processing

Shipping was $42.05 to ship to BC, Canada.

Order Total $197.87

Received today… Only one InStyler! $200 for one - would have never paid for this if I knew they were going to rip me off. I can’t even leave a message at their customer service line. Tells me to call back during business hours.

I was worried that this infomercial would be some sort of scam. I was happy to see the shipping was quick… but I didn’t get the free one like they are offering. I am very upset!

August 20, 2008 at 2:54 am
(14) Kay says:

Yeah ive seen the infomercials and i really want one and these comments make me more interested in one. Does any one know if this is available in stores? If so, where? Thanks

August 20, 2008 at 4:54 pm
(15) December says:

I ordered the instyler on August 7th, I have yet to receive it. I decided to check the status today and I was quite surprised when the automated response told me that my account total was $184.90. I called them up and was very rudely told to scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen. did that and of course it’s written there - I do hope it’s worth it!!

August 21, 2008 at 3:30 am
(16) Lisa says:

I like many of you reading these reviews was blown away by the infomercial for the InStyler and had to get one. I read Mrs. Smith’s review and thought she just didn’t give it a chance like many others are thinking, but after receiving mine, I have to agree with Mrs. Smith. It doesn’t come out that straight or shiny it actually whacked my hair out a little and the burning hot rotating brush actually burnt and blistered my ear lobe severely… not really a product I want to keep practicing with or get used to if that’s the cost. Seriously, don’t get sucked into all the hype and save your money for a quality product.

August 21, 2008 at 12:17 pm
(17) Florna says:

Ebay has one for sale that I saw a while ago and its cheaper there. If you don’t like it, maybe it will be easier to return it to the ebay seller than the Instyler company. I have never tried the Instyler yet and I was curious to how effective it is so I came looking for reviews.

August 21, 2008 at 12:44 pm
(18) Jon says:

Before you buy, CHECK OUT THE FINE PRINT: The unit costs $14.99 at the outset; They will then charge you $39.99 x 3 payments and $15,00 shipping. Total cost: $149.96. Take a look at the BOTTOM of their web page.

The SCAM isn’t the unit itself, it’s the PRICING (which is in plain view in retrospect, but not so easy to spot given clever web design if you don’t look on the first page.) The email invoice, of course, doesn’t include the ‘extra’ pricing scheme. They also try to sell you any number of ‘extras’ along the way including expedited shipping, upgrades, and other hair care products.

I bought this unit for my wife, but now, given a reread of the fine print we will be returning it. This is a pity too, because it really worked well on her hair.

It IS an easy straightener to use, but the pricing is deceptive and–let’s face it–it’s not a miracle, its a hair straightener. The key isn’t the rotation aspect, it’s the fact that the unit is thinner than most hair straighteners and that it also works (as do some others) with a brush that presses the hair to the hot roller.

I bought the ‘professional’ version which heats up more quickly. (You only get one of these vs. two of the regular instylers. Another gotcha!)

$150 may not be out of the question for a high end or truly professional device, but I don’t think that this is the case for the Instyler. It’s mostly made out of light plastic and is more of a K-mart variety. It does do what the infomercial says it does, but you really do get snookered if you don’t read the fine print. I see this company fighting off a class action suit for deceptive business practices in the future, but until then: caveat emptor.

(19) Brianna says:

Hi there,

I have quite curly hair, and I have used a chi iron for the past 3 years. It started to get thin when straightening it, and the instyler ( although it takes quite a bit longer) does add nice body to my hair. I live in Canada and did the proffesional upgrade, and I did get two of them. Over all I’d say it was worth the 187$, however if I had to choose between this and the CHI, it would be the CHI.
Hope this helps. When I bought it there were no reviews anywhere :)

August 22, 2008 at 1:33 pm
(20) Tara says:

I absolutely love my Instyler. I finally got it and it was well worth the wait. I have thick frizzy hair and it completely made it smooth and full. I usually use a flat iron and the hair looks and smells slightly when I used it. Never again.

Honestly, I would pay more for this product, since it means I dont have to go to a hairstylist and pay a fortune in straighteners ever again.

There is a noise that it makes but like any unit, its minimal and eventually you just block it out.

Two thumbs way up!!!

(21) Lisa says:

Forget the instyler i highly recommend FHI Heat Runway iron it is amazing and has a special plate that makes your hair healthy. This is the 2nd 1 i purchased it its worth every penny its runs around $400 to $450 i got mine from beans beauty they have a website beansbeauty.com totally worth it.

(22) Cara says:

I’ve seen the infomercial a couple of time and was hesitant because I ‘’HEARD'’ the words 14.95$ to try it so I had prety much made out my mind to purchase it if it was under 45$. After reading the total costs and the comments, I thought my old way of handling my hair is still okay. No way I’m going to pay close to 200$ for something probably coming out of China at 4$ à piece.
My friends and I are trying our very best to buy first product from Québec, Canada, and USA. Of course, Germany, France and Italy are great manufacturers at higher prices who deliver great products.
BUY AMERICAN for heaven’s sake else there will be no industries left by the year 2025!!!

(24) Alex says:

I have been using mine for 2 weeks (bought from Ebay seller for WAY less + free upgrade to rapid heat version)- and I love it! With flat irons, I was doing ok but was tired of the overly flat look. With the InStyler, my hair is more bouncy, shiny, and the flips are so easy to do. Have not yet tried curling. Also, the hot cylinder can burn you so this is not for the very clumsy, but overall, I am very satisfied. Will be getting another for my sister who is jealous!

August 25, 2008 at 7:34 am
(25) Jon says:

Just following up my comment from earlier. I didn’t want to underestimate the importance of a hair care product that actually works. Tara is right on the money when she comments that the InStyler DOES work and this alone could justify the price for some. As with any flat iron or hair care product, whether the device works for you or not depends on your hair type and your ability to use this kind of equipment. My wife found that it was easy to use and could get the desired results.

The problem I have with the company is that they are less than straightforward about the pricing scheme.

Once again the scam is NOT the item itself, the scam is in the pricing scheme. They are NOT being up front about this because they want to make a quick buck.

If you do not want to keep the InStyler after you realize the actual retail price, you will need to CALL the company and return the product with the proper authorization code, or your credit card will be charged the full price in monthly installments.

In all fairness, the customer service representative that I got came on the line after about 4 minutes on hold and provided all the necessary information. I still have to see whether all this works out, but so far no complaints about customer service.

I just ordered one. I hope it works for me. I am a brunet with normal but undulated hair. I usually don’t like heat to treat my hair. I feel it burns my hair. They said the instyler temperature goes from 250 to 380 F. I was reading that is less than the standards irons temperature. So, I hope it does not burn my hair.
If some one reading this already got it, please comment.

My story with this product is not a success simply because I have yet to receive it..I placed the order July 27th..took the faster 2 week delivery..waited and called they kept telling me it was on the way…and of course they had already charged my credit card..after the 4th call I was told they shipped it with no street address..then told me they did not have any and would send me one that friday…a week passed and I just called and now they tell me they will ship me one out either this friday or monday..it is now going on 2 months..so I finally cancelled it..I order many things on line and have never had this happen..so buyer beware..

(33) Cammi says:

I ordered the Instyler a month ago. They sent me two. i guess this is their way of selling more. Well, one of them was broken on delivery. The iron itself is a piece of crap. It snags your hair and makes it fuzzy. It does NOT straighten curly hair….especially if its damp. and its absolutely not hot enough. as for the customer service, its horrible. All they want to do is sell you stuff. and if you return it, they will charge you ‘accidentally”. And of course you have to pay for shipping. TOO MUCH HASSLE, BAD PRODUCT..bottom line.

(35) Janet says:

If you’re willing to pay $100 for a flat iron that can make your hair brittle what is the fuss about spending $150 for 2 instylers? A flat iron probably costs less than $10 to make and yet people still pay the price. Prior studies, commercialization, returns and lawsuits have to be figured into all merchandising. What they need to do is get it into the stores so the price can be much lower and allow more people to buy and keep or return the product. Companies selling to individuals is alot more expensive then selling in bulk to companies. This way the product could cost about 1/4 of the cost and everyone would be alot happier (including the company selling the product). In the mean time, it’s trial and error for everyone.

BUYER BE WARE! Whenever you see a product that has a 30 day trial period you are more likely going to end up paying 10 times the trial period cost. Bowflex is a good example as saying you could pay as little as $15 a month yet the product will end up costing you over $2,000.
Trial period products are always cheap to get you interested but if it was going to actually be cheap there wouldln’t be a trial period.

(36) Anne says:

I’ve been using the Instyler for two weeks and I love it! It’s the first hair styling product that I’ve been able to use on my own hair & like the result. I have very thick, coarse, frizzy hair. I use it on the highest setting. It immediately smooths it & straightens it. You can flip in or out. I think this product is ideal for my type of hair or medium thick hair, maybe doesn’t work as well on fine hair. The only criticism I have of the product is that the rod rotates in only one direction. That is a pretty basic design flaw. It’s much harder to do one side of my head because I have to hold it with my left hand. They should definitely make that improvement on the design. I’m keeping my Instyler though & feel certain I can find a friend to buy the second one. I love the Instyler!

(37) classicgrrl says:

I just ordered mine from ebay. If you reside in the US, don’t pay $150 for this - go to ebay and if you want to bid there is one starting for $35; otherwise, purchase one with free shipping (the “pro” fast heat) for $80 and you can return for a full refund if you don’t like it.

I have baby fine, thin, stick straight limp hair with a perm in it for body at the moment; I’m enormously skeptical so we’ll see what this thing does.

Major scam on pricing for sure, but then they ALL are on that station. They almost hung up on me when I prodded what exactly the TOTAL price was. Yes, with no expedited service and no extra gel product that works with it, plus shipping and handling, near $150, whether it is broken or you get 2 or not. Buyer beware! They didn’t even mention the payment schedule on TV, which is usually not the case.

I see that someone says it is coming soon to As On Tv, but I find no evidence of it when I go to the site only if you click on the link that Anna provides. I hope that they do offer on other sites because that is way too much to pay for a curling iron/brush…and why the heck would you need 2?? The ad reels you in and then throws you to the sharks…for me I will continue to use the old hair dryer and round brush or plug in my 25.00 curling iron.

I’m not looking to start any type of war but watch the infomercial carefully! The first wavy-haired model who demos the Instyler (The one who says something like, “I wish this was around when I was in high school!”) keeps straightening the same piece of hair (at least it looks that way to ME). It’s almost as if she has straight pieces “hidden” among the wavy pieces (The Instyler guy - forgot his name - keeps rooting around in her hair for the hidden straight pieces).

Saw it on tv last week. It looks like it does alot more than a flat iron, and the hair on the girls looked amazing after they finished. I like that it works with less heat than a flat iron. I did some searching online and also found some clips from the infocommercial on the youtube site, and I can’t stop watching!! I just might have to buy one!

Has anyone else on here actually used one? I would like to know.

I looked at that asontv.com site selling them, and the link no longer works. Maybe that was not a real site. If I get one, I would just go to the official one anyway.

Hi ladies, I can’t even begin to tell you how many flat irons I have, in trying to find the one that really works well. I am nearly broke lol(laugh out loud). My hair is not thick or frizzy so I can imagine how frustrating it must be for women with hard to manage hair. And i tell you something we who order numerous products from television know that rarely the product lives up to its promises. Not to say that the product does not work but to say the product really does not live up to its promises. I want to order this Instyler too, because my hair does not really look all that great with a flat iron. Most of the time it looks dull and yes its straight but with no bounce or style. Anyway Im going to keep reading reviews before spending a fortune on a product that doesnt live up to its promises. I mean honestly I can feed my family for a week on the price of this Instyler. Wish you luck ladies.

Hi! I actually just saw the commercial on TV for it and have been reading the reviews which have been very interesting. I have extremely LONG-THICK-CURLY-FRIZZY hair that are impossible to straighten even with a real iron (which i normally have to use because nothing else works) and even if about 5 people work on it for hours. Believe me it’s a headache that’s why I usually just tie it in a bun because till date I haven’t found anything good that will actually work for me and easy to use.

I want to get something like this but still not sure because of the high price. Would there be any other reccomendations? Help!

I just happened to come back on this blog for something else and remembered I’d commented about the Instyler. I’ve read the comments and I just want to say that I’ve had my Instyler for over a month and I STILL love it. My daughter loves it, too. She even took it to college with her and all of her dorm friends fight to use it. All I can say is that I would rather spend $150 for a tool I’m going to use for a few years than spend $40 for a flat iron two or three times a year, of course, depending on the brand. Look at it this way - if you amortize that $150 over a few years, the tool isn’t at all expensive for what it does. It’s worth the price if it works. Just food for thought… like I said, I still like mine.

I am a licensed Cosmetologist. The Instyler looks interesting and I may try it but with everything I’ve learned in research I definitaly agree Caveat Emptor. I have been using a Cosioliss flat iron since I was in school. Theirs can do everything from straighten to waves to curly with one product. The Corioliss doesn’t clump as much as my other irons did and it auto adjusts the heat to the hair. I’ve used it on African curly hair and it did wonderfully and on my own daughter when she was about 3yrs old (caucasion fine/thick/blonde hair). It is a medium price and is beautiful in results. The hair evens shines when I am through. The key to not damaging hair is to use a heat protecting product on hair before applying the heat source (hair dryer, curling iron, flat iron, marcel’s). I sent an e-mail on the Instyler blog asking questions as a professional and if I get any response I’ll let you all know. Hope any of this helps.

For those that want to check out the corioliss the web site is www.corioliss.com. They are an European based company but they are available here in the U.S. and for those that don’t want to trust online (I’m sceptical if I can’t touch it first) you can often find them at Kiosks in malls around the holidays.

Hope any of this helps

I was wary too and it does seem on the expensive side, but I took the plunge anyway and I love it. I’ve never been good with a round brush and dryer and while I’ve had better luck with a curling brush-dryer the blowing heat gets to me - yes, hot flashes are upon me. No such problem with the instyler. I have rather thick hair with lots of natural curl/wave, but it also has a mind of it’s own. The instyler suits my hair perfectly - I fumble with it a bit, but my hair looks great. I highly recommend it.

(64) Maribel says:

I just got my Instyler and I think it works great. I currently have the Maxiglide, which I still love because it straightens very well, but it’s heavy, big and bulky. Also, the teeth pull my hair and I get those “lines” in my hair. Also, my hair is so hot afterwards, I have to wait a few seconds before I can touch it. I’m not giving my Maxiglide because it works great, but the Instyler is light and easy to use. You do have to be careful not to put it close to your scalp/skin because the rolling metal bar is hot and will burn, but otherwise it works great. I quickly straightened my hair and my friend’s hair, too. She’s planning on buying it for herself. I got a special offer “2 for the price of 1.” I can’t remember what I paid, but I think it’s about $50-60 for TWO Instylers. I’m giving the other one to my sister who’s excited to use it. So, in my opinion, I think it’s worth it and I’m so glad I bought it. I also got the 3 year warranty for both of the Instylers for a low price. And I am an actual customer, not from the company.

this item is a true rip off. I did not realize that this item will end up costing 164.00 wirh shipping and handling. Please don’t buy, its not worth the price.

September 23, 2008 at 6:16 pm
(66) Elyzabeth says:

No, it’s really not a rip off but I suppose that’s a matter of opinion. I don’t plug hair tools but I will plug this one because we like it so much. I too am an idiot with a round brush and blow dryer so the Instyler was perfect to work with for me. I’m just not coordinated for more than one hair tool at a time. Definitely not a rip off. I would recommend it highly.

(67) Laverne Cohill says:

I just got my Instyler yesterday and I tried it and absolutley LOVE it!!! I’ve tried all types of straighteners including the Kysoseki but was unhappy with the results. I’m African American and couldn’t find anything that would straighten my daughter’s natural hair which is EXTREMELY difficult to manage her tangled ends. The Instyler straightened her hair in minutes leaving it soft and silky without frizzing. The heat settings are very efficient for dry or damp hair. 2 stylers for $164 is nearly what I paid for 1 Kysoseki. It’s definitely worth it!!

I have several friends who are African American and they have been wondering if it will work on their hair. I will tell them to try it based on La Verne’s recommendation.

I asked about the full cost before ordering for the trial period and was prepared to pay the $140.00. My problem is that I have to have it on the highest heat level to get any amount of straightening, but because it’s not ceramic it’s damaging my hair. I paid $ 140.00 to damage my hair!!! Then I’ll go buy repairing serum to repair my hair!! I’m returning mine tommorrow.

I got it last week and I already returned it. The brush did not do its work and the iron burned my hair. This is a scam. They won’t return the $14.99 and I needed to pay $12.00 to ship it back. I am looking to but the “RevoStyler hor bruhs” for my type of hair. Has anyone tried that one?

(71) JasmineSoooo says:

I am amazed how people can have such totally different experiences with this iron. White girls and African american girls have luck with it so it can’t be all bad. I have thick, straight Asian hair and this product did not burn or hurt my hair. It gave it nice body and shine with no damage, but my hair was healthy to begin with. Maybe Rahda’s hair was already damaged…? I see nothing wrong with this product and worth the price. As for the RevoStyler, my friend has that one and she likes it although I hear it tangles long hair. I’m staying with the Instyler.

i just got mine today and i used it and it was fantastic!! i have straight hair in the front and curly in the back and i can never get the back to stay straight (not even my hair dresser can) and ive gotta say my hair has stayed straight and silky smooth all day. a piece of warning though it is very easy to burn yourself id say thats the only downfall about it

(73) Kellye says:

I’m not terribly impressed hearing from the so-called professionals’ comments on here. Clearly your expertise is in something aside from hair, or else you work on hair with no actual education and training.

I’ve viewed this piece of equipment at a trade show, along with other holy grail as seen on TV hair appliances that have come and gone. Without question the combination of the heat setting, brushing mechanism, and basic materials used do most certainly damage the hair - as is true of any heat appliance, but to a much greater degree with this product. The very construction of it necessitates multiple passes for most hair types, compounding the damage. Bear in mind, not all damage to initially healthy hair will be immediately recognizable, but with repeated use it is inevitable.

Comparing the price for this discount-store quality appliance versus a professional quality ceramic/tourmaline iron is like comparing apples to oranges. It’s not simply a price point issue. There are genuine manufacturing and materials deficiencies in the Instyler compared with Sedu, Solano or any other professional quality iron that has gone through years of research, development and improvement.

I advise anyone who is considering this product to seriously consider consulting with a stylist prior to making the investment.

Kellye, with all due respect, you sound like you’re a shill for sedo or solano or something. You say you “viewed” the in styler at a trade show - have you actually used it? If you ahve not actually used it, how can you say it will ruin my hair or that it doesn’t work?

Comments on this blog seem to be 50 / 50, but I saw this review on Glamour.com, and they seemed to really love it!! http://www.glamour.com/beauty/blogs/girls-in-the-beauty-department/2008/09/itriedit-tuesday-the-instyler.html

Hi, I recently received my instyler in the mail (the packing is all ‘green’ and made from recycled materials!). I REALLY like it. I have fairly normal shoulder length straight hair but it does add volume and make my hair look more ‘polished’. I am happy with the product and it does make my hair look more natural than using a curling iron and WAY easier than drying my hair with a round brush. Has a slight learning curve but other than that I am pleased.

(76) Alma says:

I recently received my InStyler which took forever to arrive since I did not pay extra for rush delivery. But I have to say that it was worth the wait. I ordered the rapid heat version. I found it very easy to use (just like any other flat or curling iron). I am able to straighten, curl, flip-out my hair a lot faster than with the regular flat or curling iron. People keep asking me if I just cut my hair becuase I am able to do different hairstyles with no fuzz. (I have straight shoulder length hair.) I also get a lot of compliments on my hair. Yes, it is a bit pricey but to me it is worth it. I also recently bought two Angelique products–a flat iron and curling iron for $195 each and I definitely prefer the InStyler. Yes, it does make a noise but it is not annoying. Based on my personal experience, I recommend the InStyler!

(81) Brenda says:

Well..I’ll tell you this. If you order this product and get a working one…it’s okay. But my order was supposed to be 2 for $149 but when I received it..luckily I checked both out the day I got them. One did not work..AT ALL! I called and they told me I had to ship it back and they would reimburse me. BUT…they had to recieve it within 5 days or I would not get reimbursed for my shipping and they wouldn’t replace it. I shipped it on 8/21/09 and here it is 9/29/08 and still no replacement and no reimbursement for my out of pocket expense of $30.50 for shipping. The product has to be shipped to CANADA so it’s not cheap to send back. I’ve gotten nothing but the run-around when I call their Customer Service Dept. and today when I called…I was number #20 in line for the return department so I gave up and just finally filed a dispute with my credit card company for 1/2 the charge I paid PLUS the $30.50 they promised they would reimburse. We’ll see how that goes.

As far as the product…well…it’s not what I hoped for. The spinning barrel pulls the crap out of my hair …if it gets too close to the end. The only way it works on my hair is if it’s on high heat…because I have course hair….so now the ends are dryer than ever!! The advertisement says that the spinning barrel “polishes” your hair and makes it shiney…NOT TRUE! How could it…it’s must a metal barrel…with NO coating that I can see. CHI flat irons make my hair shine…and if they had one of these types of products..I think it might be worth the money. But unless you want to take a chance that you might be lucky enough to get one that works….my advice is …forget about this product. I’ve definitely learned my lesson with Infomercials though. Like buying a “pig in a poke” LOL Don’t know what you’re getting or even if you will like it. I am tender headed and the way my hair gets hung up in the ends of that spinning barrel really ticks me off because it hurts. Like I said…don’t waste your money..or you might have to waste a lot of time with their Customer Service Department.
I wish I’d researced this product online before I bought this expensive piece of crap.

Hey guys, i just got my instylers today. I ordered it about 2 weeks ago, and i did the 30 day trial offer for 14.99. Well they took about $17 dollars off my credit card, and it did take a while to get here, but it is worth it. I am black with relaxed hair and my hair tends to get a little rough after a week or 2 after being touched up, and i just tried the instyler and it made my hair soooo soft and manageable. (85) Elyzabeth says:

I really have to disagree with Brenda, but I guess that’s why there are blogs - so we can all give our opinions. The instyler has been the answer to my prayers as far as my hair is concerned - and even as I say that there are going to be 500 different opinions, some for and some against. I have loved mine since I got it as as far as pulling my hair, it’s never done it - but I have brushed my hair out first before using it so it can’t snag. And it leaves my hair very shiny. So… for what it’s worth, I think it’s way worth the money - and I have a Chi, too and I like the Instyler waaaaaaay better, so… all I can say is that if someone is thinking about getting it, find a friend who has one and try it first. Or maybe go in with someone to buy it. My house loves this product!!!!!

This looks interesting, but that 2 for 1 deal is pretty fishy. They either aren’t selling as well as they thought or they need to reach some numbers for their books. Does anyone know how long they’ve been running this “limited offer” for?

Another thing, you are really paying for 2… they arent going to give anything for free… so that would set each unit at just over $60.00. At that price point, I’d be willing to try one even if it was “wasted” money… but not 2. Why would I need 2?
This product seems like it either works, doesn’t work or you have to make it work for you lol.

I know they have that $14.99 30 day trial promotion, but I’m sure by the time you receive it, the 30 days will almost be up lol
Does anyone know, if you try to return it with in that initial 30 day time frame, if they’ll charge you that $50.00 restocking fee?…. That’s probably gonna be a “yes”.

If I can find this in the $40-$60 range, I’d be willing to give it a try. If it made my hair look anything like the girls they showed, I’d be willing to pay a little over $100.00 for a single unit.
Why can’t they have an option for just one unit?…

Oh and BTW, for those that are complaining about excessive heat damage, you should be using some sort of heat protectant before touching anything hot on your hair anyway.

I have been seriously considering buying an Instyler. I always check out Ebay to see if someone is selling and sure enough there are several sellers offering it already. There is even one “Official” seller offering it with a 14 day return policy at 1 for $80 with free s/h and 2 for $110 with $9.99 s/h. I haven’t asked any questions of the seller yet about a restocking fee, but I didn’t see a reference to it in the listing. But I do know this beats the websites offer and that Ebay sellers usually guard their feedback pretty closely so they’re not out to stick it to you so if you want to return it they’ll take it back.

I just saw the infomercial on the “Instyler” and immediately got online to check out the website. I wanted to see how much they would charge after your $14.99 trial period was over. The price tag is kinda hefty! I will say that I have owned & tried MANY straightening irons on my wavy, frizzy & thin hair. I have a lot of hair, it’s just thin for the most part, very frizzy, and oily. I have gone through 2 Maxiglide straightener’s already. Living in south florida has put these straightener’s to the test!! Maxiglide is the only straightener i’ve used that even in high humidity my hair stay’s straight. I also recently purchased the Kyeoseki (spelling?) straightener to try out. I have used my Maxiglide for about 4 years now & am SOLD on it. The Kyeoseki straigtener is just as good, it just takes a LOT longer to do my hair because the plates are so small. It heats up in less than 10 seconds which is awesome! The heat control device is really nice also! I would NEVER use a straightener bought from Wal-Mart. Been there, done that (in high school) and it’s no wonder why I had no boyfriends! :)
My hair is straight & nice now. I MAY try the Instyler if I can get it for less than $50. just to have & use in between using my trusty ol’ Maxiglide.

After reading several negative reviews, I finally came a cross a handful of positive ones. I ordered my Instyler (the upgraded one) through ebay last weekend and received it really fast…on Thursday. I tried it today and I love it! My hair looks like I just came from the salon. It is very easy to use. I have very frizzy hair and found that I have to go over each section about 3 times to get it nice and smooth. I decided to go with wavy curls and my hair looks awesome. Much easier than trying to blow dry my hair which takes forever. I also have the Maxiglide and find that it is very heavy but it does a very nice and quick job. With the Instyler, it does take me longer but it is so much fun and the results are beautiful. I only wish it was ceramic plates…maybe later, they will come out with one. If and when they do, I’ll be getting it!

I was considering buying this product so this is part of my research into it. I have heavy hair that likes to frizz out so I’m always looking for ways to straighten it. I’ve read the reviews and my comment is this - if the thing works, price really shouldn’t matter.

And this two for one deal - figure it out - you’re talking around $80 for each unit which is a whole lot cheaper than some of those top flat irons that can cost upwards of $280, right?? So yes, $80 is a lot of money, but I would pay it if the rotating iron thing works. It’s all about getting what you pay for and I would rather pay $80 for something that works than $280 for something that is only going to last me a year or two. Now THAT is ridiculous.

I think after reading everything I am going to give it a try. Worse case, I’m out the return shipping fee. Best case, I’ve found a hair tool that I can’t live without. To me, it’s worth the risk. I’ll keep you posted….

Good for you, Mallory. It sounds like I have stock in this company or something the way I am advocating it, but I just really think it’s worth trying. My family loves it. If it doesn’t work for some people, then you have to think that it’s either operator error or maybe they had product in their hair (when it says clearly not to) or maybe they didn’t comb their hair out before using it, or whatever. Maybe it wasn’t on the right heat setting. Who knows? We just really love it and would like to share our success of this tool with others. I hope it works for you, Mallory!

I have just finished reading all of these comments on the Instyler and placed a call to their customer service dept. since I just received mine one week, ago, and I am still trying to see if it is worth the cost. The customer service dept. knocked $30.00 off my next payment and delayed the next payment in order to give me more time to try their product. My hair is very thick and coarse and I have to get my hair almost dry in order to be able to use the Instyler. Also, it seems to be taking a lot of time to style my hair. However, I am going to give it another try since there are a lot of good comments on this blog.

You will have to pay a minimum of $100 for a high-end flat iron. So those who expect to pay under $100 for a professional flat iron are kidding themselves. The Instyler isn’t a cheapie you get at Walmart.

And for that guy who bought it for his wife, and then returned it because he didn’t like the extra $15.00 shipping charge which was “hidden” (although it worked for his wife’s hair and she loved it) - you are a real a-hole. When a woman finds a tool that works for her hair you don’t return it!! WTF is wrong with you????

I have the instyler and love it! I have curly brown hair that is regular thickness and frizzes in humidity. The instyler didn’t cause any breakage and it gives it a great shine AND it doesn’t frizz in the humidity.
As with most flat irons, you have to learn to use it and get used to handling it so you don’t burn yourself. It takes a little practice (like with any tool).

The price is absolutely perfect considering you get TWO - I gave one as a gift to my sister and she loves it too!

If the instyler was a scam then I wouldn’t have been able to TRY it for 14.99 (if it was a scam then they would want me to pay for the whole thing right away and never give me my money back!!!)

Good luck!

The best flat or curling iron out there is Hot Tools. I have tried many different ones such as Chi. None of them work as well as Hot Tools. Just want to say,Everything that is offered on TV eventually ends up in stores or in different catalogs. Also when forced to get two they are usually then offered singulary at half the price. So if you want to still buy, just wait a few months, after the hotness of the “New Product” dies down. You will be able to get it singulary at half the price. Your just paying right now for being the first to get it and all the advertising. Remember PedEgg it was only on TV at first, now you can get it everywhere!

I think this product is made for women with longer hair. I cannot use the rotating iron on my hair because it will not work with it. It does get my hair straight but I have a problem getting the roots. I got this on ebay for $80. I have natural hair (no relaxer) so I will need something to get my roots straight. It does give my hair shine and body though. I’m sure I could have found something better than this product for that. All in all not bad.

I purchases this product off ebay for $80. It really does get my hair straight and it curls it but I cannot get the roots of my hair. This is the only problem. I guess I will have to buy a hot comb to get that part. My hair is natural (no relaxer) so it does fine with it. If I could get the roots of my hair I would be okay. I guess just like anything it may work for some people and may not work for others.

Hello girls, Thank you all for your comments.
I wonder if any of you who has the same hair i do and tried this product.
My hair is kinda long, heavy, healthy, very very soft & smooth and straight by nature… Every time i try to curl it a little bit, or whenever i go to the salon to make a little style out of it, no matter how long the lady takes to curl it or do anything it goes back to straight in an hour or so. Nothing works for my hair… nothing! So I wonder, will this product help me?
Thanks

(107) Catherine says:

I purchased the In Styler and fully understood the pricing of $39.99 over 3 months if I decided to keep it and the $14.99 to get it. I thought the price a little high but considering you get two I went for it. I received them both in reasonable time. I figured if I liked it I would give one to my daughter. I have medium length hair and it’s thin or fine. I tried the setting on the lowest and did not get much results. I went to the next setting and that worked better. The In Styler goes through your hair very nicely. It makes it shiny and gets rid of the friz. I have friz from coloring. It straightens hair and makes it very soft. I like it. I had my daughter come over and try it on me and she was able to do some nice, soft curls. They held ok. She tried it on her hair. Her hair is longer and thinner. It worked ok on her hair and added soft curls and shine. I am keeping the product and will give her the 2nd one for her birthday. I don’t think they pulled a scam here as they indicated everything on the infomercial. It does take a little effort to get used to using to using it but not bad at all. Catherine

Amazing how the number of comments are displayed here…it sounds to me to be more negative about this product than positive. I like everyone else I happen to see the commerical and sure enough I was amazed…Hey it’s a good thing I didn’t buy it right? …lol I’ll just stick with my old ways round brush and my trusty blow dryer haha!

Thanks for the 411 would of lost my money.

I finally received mine today. My husband got me one(actually 2) for a BDay gift. He did not order the rapid heat version but it’s what I got.

I tried it out. I have to say with only one try under my belt, I’m VERY pleased! It was simple really. The back of my head was harder to do. This is my first straightener purchase.

I recently tried the keratin treatment at my salon. It was 20% off and I paid $165. I was only marginally happy with the results. It barely lasted 2 months.

I hope I like this tool as much in the days to come!!

Best wishes :)

Thank you to everyone who posted a comment. I saw the commercial and was skeptical as well but I have long curly hair and love it straight so was willing to take the chance so a friend of mine decided to split the cost with me,I will post another comment soon as it should be here any day now, I am hoping my experience is a good one, we went the extra $$ to get the three year warranty along with the professional heat setting, I figured the CHI was about 150 when it came out and this appears to work my only concern is it isn’t ceramic…we’ll see

(113) Julie says:

For those of you who actually though you were going to pay 14.99 for the Instyler, I would suggest you listen and pay attention. No where in the commercial do they say it is 14.99 only. They stress it is a 30 day trial. Why would you want a product that only cost 14.99? That alone would tell you it is a piece of crap.
The Instyler is fabulous! I love it and would have paid double for it. The fact that I got one free is just icing on the cake.
Amazon does not have this same product nor does “as seen on TV”
I do my research and believe me, if I could have saved some bucks I would have!
If you got charged more than you thought I bet you were not listening to the operator. My operator was very clear and I asked questions before I just blindly said sure send it to me.
We have to educate ourselves - it is a free market place so beware and do your homework!
I give Instyler 10 out of 10 stars!

(115) Nia says:

This product works wonderfully! I have never had a heated hair styler product that was so effortless and fast. It does not burn my hair and I have fine hair. I have read some of the reviews and yes its expensive but overall worth it. These trials always happen where they sell two. Not because its cheap but its just a sales test. Take ADVANTAGE, because honestly they will quit that 2for1 once they see it sells as a single and you will lose out. Anyways… just some advice.

I just ordered the product today, online instead of phone, and did the full price all at once so I won’t get billed for the three months. I was wondering if anyone had any trouble with the billing, like they don’t charge more than your online receipt.

I lose track if I go to monthly payments so paid total upfront with 3 yr warrenty…I hope I get the 2 units for the price of one, did not upgrade to instant heat, but did pay priority shipping. Looking forward to it. I have long fine hair that is hard to hold a wave much less a curl. The best thing before now I’ve used is the Caruso System steam rollers. Very excellent.

Has anyone ever used the Revo Styler? That’s what I use now, plus the ceramic flat iron. So much work. The Revo is very bulky & heavy, but it works better than just a regular round brush. I’m still looking for something that will give me that salon look. I think I will try this - it can’t be anymore bulky, heavy or noisy as the Revo.

(119) Gwen Barker says:

Heads up - this is really about $85/unit. The $14.99 is a trial 30 day fee whether you keep it or not. Keep records if you return it because I have called 3x to get my credit and tell them they received the unit a month ago. I am waiting to see if I really get my $.
The product is not worth $85.

(121) Jane says:

I called to order. However, I decided not to order after learning that it takes 6-8 weeks to arrive and can arrive in 14 days only if the purchaser pays an extra $5.95. They tried to sell me a bazillion extra things, including a “computer chip” to make it heat up faster for $19.95, hair spray designed for the In Styler for $9.95, etc. Also, they add $15 for shipping to the overall total cost of $135 if the purchaser decides to keep the product after the first 30 days. I decided I didn’t trust the seller after learning about all these late-disclosed extras.

Received it after a two month wait. Worked out but also found pricing to be deceptive. No mention on infomercial about the “$14.99 trying charge”, nor the extra payments and I didn’t notice it on the website when ordering. Now it’s very plain on the bottom which made me call to hear the bad news. It’s going back on principle. I’ve ordered many things from infomericals and this is the first one I’ve been scammed on.

I read the comments on this site and was interested in buying the instyler, but when I went to the website and saw how much it really cost I was like No Way. Well I went to ebay and bought the instyler for $80 with the rapid heating and free shipping. It came within a few days and I used it today with very pleasing results. I am a African American female with relaxed hair and it worked great. It takes getting used to and you do need to practice with it, but I am happy with the purchase. Hope this helps others it making decision. If you don’t want to deal with the extra crap just buy straight from ebay.

(128) Eileen Wiley says:

What they don’t make clear in their advertisements, is that all total you end up paying $134.92. The $14.95 is only what you pay for the 30 day trial. The product is very difficult to use and yeilds poor results. The company is terrible to deal with. Good luck trying to find the address to return it.

Wendy, I use the revo styler and a flat iron too. I am curious to see if you like the instyler, did you order one yet?

October 22, 2008 at 4:01 pm
(133) Lady Marmalade says:

After reading these reviews, I really have to say that you all must not be reading the fine print on things. I have very kinky, dry black hair and when new hair tools come out I pay attention. I watched the informercial and I watched Kimberly Locke straighten her hair. My hair is worse than hers. So I thought I would give it a try but I did it after I EDUCATED myself on what exactly it would cost. The breakdown is this - you are paying about $80 per unit and you get two for the advertised price. $80 is a lot less than higher end flat irons I have used. So my In styler came last week and you know what? I love that thing! I burned one of my acrylic nails trying to work it the first day but after I figured it out, it did wonders for my hair! No drying, no breaking - my hair was actually soft!!! I couldn’t believe it!!! So for all of you who say negative things, then you must not have done your homework, ladies. All I can say is that, for the price, I would buy this iron again and again because it WORKS. Good luck to those of you who are thinking of trying it because you definitely should!!

October 22, 2008 at 5:39 pm
(134) Nancy G says:

I have been using an acrilic flat iron for years, I was tired of the flat look. So after looking at the infomercial I ordered it. I got burned a couple of times & I was not impresses. It does not do the roots at all, the design does not allow it, since it will burn you. Now it does improve your hair, but it is not better than a flat ceramic iron. I will not return it, because I found a new use. I use the ceramic iron to get it smooth from root to the tip & then I use the instyler to add body and culr the tips. I know it is like combing my hair twice. But I love it. If I used the instyler alone it will not do it for me.

October 22, 2008 at 7:30 pm
(135) Lenore says:

Well, I am back with an update…

I still LOVE it over a week later! It works really well on my hair. I have alot of fine curly hair. I am able to get very close to the roots, and it does leave it soft and shiny. Yes, some hair does come out, but that happens with my combs /brushes as well.

As for the price; why do some people think this only costs 14.99? I mean get real please!!! A brush costs that much for heavens sake!

October 22, 2008 at 10:36 pm
(136) Mina says:

To be honest, I really didn’t like the Instyler AT ALL. The price is ridiculous, but I thought I’d just try it out. I have a CHI and it worked better. When I first saw the commercial, I was captured by the item, but as soon as I got it, I definitely changed my tune.

Ans the funny thing is, when I took a trip to Arizona, I stupidly left my CHI at home and bought Revlon’s Wet2Dry for $20 at Walmart just to use it for one night, and it worked better than my CHI and that Instyler piece of crap. Try it out, ladies! It’s only $20 bucks and you know that Walmart accepts almost any return if you don’t agree with me.

October 23, 2008 at 7:21 pm
(137) Karena says:

I saw the infomercial and was tempted but I’ll wait until the Instyler hits the stores before trying it. I have no problem spending $150 or more on a hair tool that works but I have no interest in being aggravated by late/delayed shipping and costly returns.

October 23, 2008 at 8:04 pm
(138) C. Comma says:

Comment from Canada. The product did not perform for me. I really disliked the noise and the hair getting caught between the cylinder and the brush. Not nice stuff. Also, the advertising is very misleading. Read it carefully. This product is going to cost you lots of money even if you don’t keep it. I have returned mine only to find it returned to me. I shall return it again with their requested RMA# and hopefully goodbye to a bad product and poor customer service. I have learned a real lesson dealing with this one. Yikes. Beware.

(139) shuhniqua says:

okayyyy…..so the instyler doesnt work AT ALL
it takes about one hour to use it and if you hold all my hair together its about 1 or 2 inches thick. this thing sucks horribly.
i only ordered it to curl my hair and sometimes straighten.
when i straighten it…i had to do it many times befire it worked.
curl it….okay the thing doesnt curl at alll thosse videos they have on their website are totally fake…thats why on the curling video she only has to curl one piece and the rest is already curled. because they used something else to curl the rest of her hair…
so in conclusion the instyler does not work.
and when i ordered it it took a month to get to me…i live in california. and i only got one instyler.
so i called theem and they said that i should wait a little longer before i send it back. so i did and i still hated it so i called agian. and guess what? they cancelled my warrenty so i threw it away. and if your looking for something cheaper and soooo much better get the kiyoseki… its amazing i have been happily using it for 5 months.

(140) Lisa J says:

I happen to like this instyler while my daughter does not. I have fluffy curly hair and my daughter has thick big waved hair that does not curl at all. I like this product because it does not give me that tired flat look, it is easy to use and gives me that straight look with some flips on the ends. My daughter likes the flat iron because she wants pin straight hair. The flat iron basically kills my hair.

(141) flora68 says:

THIS IS A HUGE RIPOFF AND A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF A SUCCESSFULL, DECEPTIVE ADVERTISING TECHNIQUE…

I too was taken in by the commercial and the boldly advertised price of $14.99 and free shipping…

Sadly their marketing stunt worked because I looked but never saw that fine-print that would have stoped me FLAT!

The InStyler works OK, for something that costs under $20. But I certainly have no use for a second one and didn’t ask for it…

Bottom line- This product is MUCH more likely to BURN YOU, both physically and financially. I am furious with these deceptive marketing techniques and would stay away from anything from this company on principlea alone.

I am still waiting for mine. did the upgrades. So hopefully itll ship next week! I have to agree, I spend a lot of money on flat irons. Have tried the chi, the sedu, and the fhi I think it is. Right now I use the JCPenney pro touch ceramic thermaline flat iron which I LOVE! However I spent 129.99 on it as well. I bought the conair infiniti silver nano or whatever with the “steam” thing and it FRIED my hair! If you will spend that much, why not try this? I am a white girl with EXTREMLY curly frizzy hair without product. So we will see…..

I JUST RECEIVED MY INSTYLER I STYLED ONE SIDE OF MY HAIR WITH THE INSTYLER AND THE OTHER WITH MY CHI FLAT IRON. MY HAIR IS THICK. I USED NO PRODUCT ON MY HAIR TO SEE THE DIFFERENCE AND THE INSTYLER TRULLY DELIVERS THE DIFFERENCE WAS TRULLY NOTICEABLE. I EVEN ASKED MY SON IF HE NOTICED THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOTH SIDES AND HE EVEN SAID THE LEFT (INSTYLER)HAS A MUCH SOFTER LOOK HAIR LOOKS COMBED OUT, COMPARED TO THE RIGHT (FLAT IRON) HAIR LOOKS STIFFER MORE PUSH TOGETHER WHERE HIS WORDS. I TRULLY LOVE IT. IT WAS SO QUICK AND EASY TO USE. IT IS GREAT FOR THE MONEY. SPECIALLY SINCE YOU ARE GETTING 2 WHICH WILL MAKE A GREAT GIFT.

This is the first time I have ever reviewed a product online. I am only writing because I have had my instyler for 1 week and it has changed my routine and I feel free from the work of styling my hair for the first time in my life. I do not work for the company. I already emailed my hair crazy friends and suggested they try this product.
My hair is thin and wavy but I have a lot of thin and wavy hair. I can not sleep on my hair and wakeup and do anything but look disheveled until I do my hair. The instyler takes my bedhead hair to salon hair in 3 minutes. I am dying over this product. I love it. I had been a Revostyler user for 6 years but now my Revostyler is a thing of my past — it is so heavy and much harder to use than the instyler. Can’t say enough good things about this product. My kids keep telling me my hair looks pretty and for the first time I agree. It looks like I paid for a blow-out and style at a great salon and all I have to do is spend a few minutes with the instyler. I will never be without one and am a complete believer in it. I am in hair heaven now.

(147) Shareeka1987 says:

I do not normally reply to these things but I had to when I read all of the people commenting on the deceptive price and such. Do you people not read anything?? You can’t just watch the informercial and not read the fine print. If you READ what’s on the SCREEN, it tells you everything you need to know before ordering. Then you will know that $14.99 is only the introductory price, not the price for the whole thing. How is that deceptive? It’s only deceptive if you don’t read it. I can’t believe the ignorance. And as far as this hair iron working, I got mine a month ago and I love it. My hair is thick and kinky and dry and it works just fine. It’s an amazing product if you actually read the instructions and learn how to use it. Educate yourselves, ladies, before you say something that makes you look stupid! You should have read EVERYTHING before ordering!!!

(150) Maryland says:

I ordered the Instyler for my step-daughter and I. I thought it would help her more than me b/c she has very thick natural curly hair, her hair is unrelaxed so she finds it hard to keep it straight especially in warm/hot weather. On the commercial they showed a girl with a similar hair texture so I thought it would work great for her. . .well I was wrong. She tried one side with the Instyler and one with a regular (cheap) flat iron that I got from TJ-Max. The Instyler unfortunately did not work as well as we’d hoped. Her hair was still wavy and frizzy. . .unlike a flat iron she could not get close enough to her scalp to make her edges straight.

If you have thick, naturally curly hair I would not recommend this the Instyler. I have not tried it yet but when I do I will make another comment. My hair is thick but not as thick as hers and my hair is also relaxed. Good luck to those who have purchased the Instyler I hope it works better for you.

October 28, 2008 at 4:13 pm
(151) Elaine says:

I have had the instyler for about two weeks and i love it! it straightens better than by BaByliss. the only thing i don’t like is that i havent learnt how to properly flip, turn in or curl my hair with the instyler. i know i need more practise with it. but i am satisfied with it and my friend got one too and she has really curly hair unlike myself and it works well for her! so :) i like it, i give it 3 out of 5… it will gain more points once i learn how to do the other stuff with it.

I have thin blond hair but it gets kind of kinky especially in humidity. I tried the Instyler and does give my hair a nice little flip if I turn it up. It took me a while to get the hang of it but it does work on thin hair. I like mine alot.

(154) Shareeka9187 says:

I want to say something more about this hair iron - I also have thick curly hair and it does a great job on it. I know that hair products work differently for everyone but I would really recommend this iron/tool. The best part is that it doesn’t seem to damage my hair at all. That is worth whatever the cost to me because I’ve used all of the flat irons out there - Maxiglide, Chi, kyoseki, you name it - and they don’t do what this does. It’s alot of money but it has been worth every cent to me because the iron WORKS. I would recommend this highly, especially to African American beauties. I love it.

(155) jamijo says:

I ordered the instyler over a month ago, after 3weeks of nothing, no charges on my card or instyler, I gave up and tried to cancel my order. impossible. didn’t happen. then I came home from work tonight and found the instyler at my door. both of them, I had ordered the regular two for one but got the professional ones (quick heat up) instead. checked my account online and was charged the price I had agreed to initially. anyway, I had already straightened my hair today before work. but I decided to test the instyler on my already straight hair. I have one word WOW! it made my stiff, unmovable hair very soft and it moves! it is shiny and I dare say it magnified my highlights.I only did the top layer on one side, the difference is amazing. I recommend this tool to anyone who has tried everything. I liked what I used before, I love this. even if I use my wet to dry ceramic iron first, this will surely be worth the money just for what it does as a finishing tool.

October 31, 2008 at 2:06 am
(156) jamijo says:

by the way I am biracial and haven’t relaxed my hair in over 3 months, I also have 6 month old caramel highlights in it. so my hair is fragile at the ends and kinky at the root. I usually use an electric hot comb,(with lots of leave in olive oil) which has always worked on my ends but not so much on the roots, so I have to use a ceramic flat iron on the nappies, leaving a crease I have to comb out with the hot comb. then after 8hrs of work the nappies rear their ugly head. so when I used the instyler tonight, nappies be gone. and the frizzy dried ends (in desperate need for a trim) smoothed out. it has been 4 hours since I used it and what a great half a head of hair I still have.

October 31, 2008 at 10:19 am
(157) Brenda Taylor says:

I tried the instyler for 2 weeks. It’s not what they say. It does not work on frizzy hair. When you want to return it (beware) you do not get the $14.99 back that’s a charge for you trying it. Also they will charge you $59.99 before the 30 day’s are up. When you send it back it cost you $12.00 for insurance and shipping cost. Then out of the $59.99 they charge you, they only refund $39.99 they keep $20.00 for shipping. So if you want to lse $40.00 buck’s try it. I wish I had know this before I tried it.

LOL! It seems like Elizabeth works for the company. The Consumers Affair Dept, can also help with the complaints you have about the product and costumer service problems too.
It also sound like they are selling the ones that some people tried and returned. For this type of products nothing better than going to a store and ask questions.

I have curly/frizzy hair I have struggled with all my life and have an entire array of products I have tired. This is the only thing I have ever been delighted with! All I have tod o now is dry my hair, use the instyler and I am ready to go with the smooth shiney hair I have always wanted! For me, this is a “life changer” and I love it!

I was thinking about buying the In styler but I don’t want to spend $150 dollars on somthing when I can get a stright iron that works better then anything else and easy to use. They should make something more affordable for people. After all look at the stock market, NOBODY wants to spend that much money!

Thank you for all of your reviews! I have decided not to purchase this tool. The bare metal barrel burning my hair into crispy frizz does not sound to appealing. I’d much rather invest in a more expensive ceramic iron that will minimize the damage done to my hair. Plz let me know if there is a good one that straightens and curls. Thanks…oh yea, there are so Instyler PR people plugging this thing…….just read through the comments, and ask yourself, would u continously return to this site to defend this product?

I ordered this online after watching the commercial. I knew the $14.99 was too low, and the deal with getting an extra so I realized I’d be paying almost $140 total for two. I paid the extra $5 for faster shipping and ordered the regular, non-rapid heating units. Took almost 3wks to arrive and I received two of the the rapid heating ones. I have a med. amount of fine, dry, hi-lighted hair that tends to curl/frizz. I shampooed my hair and conditioned it and went to bed (didn’t rinse out the conditioner–that’s how dry my hair is). Got up and used the Instyler on my head full of waves/frizz and it looks great. I used it on the lowest setting and it worked fine–the barrel gets very hot. My daughter has fine hair but a lot of it and used it on high and burned her hair and really burned her finger so be careful. I think only those with thick, coarse hair would need the highest setting. It takes some practice getting used to and I have to turn it up to med. to get it to flip my hair. If you have wave that goes all the way to your roots you might have problems as the barrel will not allow you to get that close to the roots. I have a friend that is interested in buying the second unit. I rec. that people wait b/c as many have said, it will end up at Walgreens/Walmart, etc. in the As Seen on TV endcap for a lot less.

I ordered my Instyler two days ago. I have very thick wavy hair that is heavily bleached. After reading all of the comments, I’m very anxious to see how it works on my hair– I’m crossing my fingers!!!

Anyone who says they are happy with Instyle has some type of investment in the company. No one would be happy with this product.

Just give it some time and eventually it will end up being at wal-mart…Maybe not the same exact name but the same exact thing with a different name….They always say “not available in stores” and usually say they never will be but someone somewhere will make a better, LESS expensive version of this product. I wanted the InStyler but I AM NOT paying that much for something that I may not even like and then have a hard time if I decide I don’t like it and want to return it. I wish everyone the best of luck but I think I’ll take my chances that it will eventually end up in stores…
I also noticed another thing with the infomercial…When it shows someone using a straightener it shows the hair all matted together, stiff and clumpy…MAYBE if you had tons of hairspray or gel in your hair but I have been using a straightener for a while now and I have never had anything but amazing results out of mine…I have a Remington wet to straight, paid $35 have had it for over 6 months now and haven’t had any trouble out of it so far and I love love love the way it makes my hair look and feel…The only thing I wish for is that it could make my hair look like it has more body and volume..but I was cursed with flat, straight as a board, thin hair. And my straightener doesn’t make my hair look any flatter than it looks on it’s own…The statements made about the other hair styling products were false but I guess who could blame them?!?!? They’re just trying to get people to buy theirs instead of other ones…Anyways enough rambling, good luck everyone and I hope you all can find something that works for you that will give you the kind of hair that you hope for and I hope I can as well, but this product may very well not be the “”one”"
