Not sure what to wear for your big Valentine's date on Sunday? Consider renting a hot little number. RentTheRunway.com offers designer dresses for a price of $50 on up. You can choose from a range, including Herve Leger, Catherine Malandrino (shown), Tracy Reese, Alice + Olivia and many more. The dresses arrive in two to three days and you can opt for a four or an eight day rental period. When you're done, you simply return the dress in the provided pre-addressed postage paid envelope. Rent The Runway takes care of the dry cleaning for you.
I love that you can search for dresses by occasion. In addition to Valentine's Day, other categories are wedding, work event, beach vacation and meet the parents.
While it may seem odd to rent a dress instead of buy one, I think it's really smart for a special occasion, especially if you'll be photographed a lot and need to retire the dress. It's also good for those who only have one black tie event a year and want to stay fashionable without spending the money.

One way to shave off a few precious seconds in the morning is to use the right makeup brushes. No, I'm not talking about those tiny little throwaway brushes that come with the blush, eyeshadow, etc. They're too small to do any good.
With the right brushes, putting on makeup is quick and easy: You can put on blush with a single stroke and your eyeliner will stay on longer. I like this Sonia Kashuk set of double ended brushes from Target. It comes with a case so you won't have to spend time searching for them and has just the right amount and type of brushes. I never use a lipstick brush--it's too time consuming and nearly impossible on the go, so I'm happy to see that this set is lipstick brush free.
Available at Target.

I recently read in WWD that more and more women are doing their nails at home -- and their waxes. While I appreciate it's a time saver not to have to head into the salon every week or month and it no doubt saves money, I just can't get behind the idea of waxing my own body. I have tried it once, and let me tell you, it's messy, painful and a recipe for ingrown hairs. I always shave my own legs and will get a professional bikini wax before I go on vacation.
As for my nails, I generally do paint my own. Much as I love the ladies at my local salon, they are slow as Christmas and I find I can do a decent enough job of painting my nails on my own, especially now that I know how to make the polish dry quicker.
What about you? Are you doing at-home manis or waxing?

Don't think twice about what to wear this Friday -- pull on your favorite red dress in support of National Wear Red Day to raise awareness for women and heart disease. Heart disease is the number one killer of American women, in fact 80 percent of women ages 40 to 60 have one or more risk factor for heart disease. The red dress is the symbol that reminds women that they need to pay attention to their heart disease risk. The top risk factors are:
- Heredity. If your parents or siblings have heart disease, you need to be extra vigilant about your heart health.
- Age. A woman's risk goes up after menopause.
- Obesity. Added pounds increase your risk for the disease.
- A sedentary lifestyle. If you don't exercise much, your heart disease risk goes up. If it's too cold to walk outdoors, head to the nearest mall and do a few laps while window shopping.
- Smoking. If you're still lighting up, quit today and your heart disease risk will lower.
- Race. African Americans and Latinas are at greater risk for heart disease than Asian, Caucasians and other races.
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Diabetes
If you don't have a red dress, a red top or red dress pin work just as well. I'll be headed to the annual Red Dress Fashion Show on February 11th, which Michelle Obama is rumored to attend. That's Katie Couric, flaunting her stuff in a gorge Carmen Marc Valvo gown in the 2009 Red Dress Fashion Show.
